In 2005, three-year-old Diana Flores woke up feeling out of sorts. Diana’s mother, Claudia, took her to the pediatrician, who diagnosed a case of the flu, and recommended rest and fluids.
After a couple of days, Diana still seemed uncharacteristically tired. Claudia went back to the doctor, and Diana was admitted to a Children’s Hospital for comprehensive tests. Within three hours, the doctor gave Claudia devastating news: Diana had leukemia.
Diana was very brave during this difficult time, enduring two rounds of chemotherapy, and losing her hair both times. Diana likes to draw, but during this period all her pictures were dark and sad.
To this day, Diana won’t let anyone cut her hair. She’s now well and is using her artistic skills to make a cheerful card full of flowers for the Leukemia Society. Her teacher describes her as a happy first grader who loves to folk dance.
Diana’s family would like to thank each and every Healthy Kids supporter for giving Diana access to the medical care that quite literally saved her life. They hope that we all find it in our hearts to contribute what we can—every child in Santa Clara County deserves the same opportunity Diana has to grow up healthy. |
